


New Slipware Pots
For a couple of years or so now, I have been experimenting with painting slips (colored clays) under matte or glossy white glazes.
Potters have been using slips for centuries, if not millenia, and it is exciting to work in such a traditional way and yet, perhaps give it a little bit of a new flavor.
The top and bottom pots use the sgraffito technique where a pattern is scratched through the slips once they have partially dried. The white glazes pool in the grooves, highlighting the pattern.
The crosshatch pattern in these two pots looks back to Lucie Rie's "knitted" bowls like the one below:
